The Inaugural edition of the Olentangy Berlin Girls Swim Team was full of surprises this season, and particularly at the State Meet held at C.T. Brannin Natorium in Canton last Thursday and Friday. Junior Grace Butcher swam lifetime bests in both of her events, the 100 Yard Butterfly and the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Butcher swam her way into finals in the 100 Yard Fly with a best time of 57.73 and ultimately ended up in 13th place. She also shined in the prelims of the 100 Yard Breaststroke where she touched the wall under the state record with a career best time of 1:02.55. Butcher became the first Bear swimmer ever to reach the podium at at the State Meet finishing 6th in the Breaststroke.
Perhaps the biggest surprise for the Bears was the success of the 200 Yard Medley Relay team. The team made up of Callista Rousher, Grace Butcher, Lauren Delligatti, and Staci Nation pulled together to squeak into finals and finish in 16th place with a season best time of 1:51.75. With all four swimmers returning next year the team looks to improve on the success it had this season.
Berlin will have four full classes of students next school year which will likely push the Bears into Division I, but with a strong incoming freshman class of swimmers the team only looks to be more competitive.
